The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a deep examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
