Individuals who experienced abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism after their first meeting with the new Pope at the Holy See.

The board president, heading Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the pontiff's choice to meet with them so soon in his papacy sent a strong message about his dedication to addressing the problem.

Global Strict Policy Pushed

The group is pushing for a global strict approach that would permanently remove any clergy member who admits to or is found guilty of abusing a child. This policy has already been adopted in the United States.

The Pope acknowledged that there is "opposition in some parts of the world" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is resistance," Hickey remarked.

Legacy Issue

The new Pope, who assumed the position in May, has taken on this longstanding problem that has plagued the Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to resolve the situation included an historic meeting on paedophilia within the institution and changes to canon law to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Personal Connection

For Hickey, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for global implementation of the policy is deeply meaningful. The Canadian advocate shared they were victimized by a priest who was subsequently transferred between various churches.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we want to work with him," they expressed. "We have the same goal, we want to eliminate clergy abuse."

Historic Encounter

Multiple members of the coalition, which includes victims and supporters from more than 30 nations, met with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The meeting, originally scheduled for a brief period, lasted to a full hour, during which the religious leader "mostly listened to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was described as "very understanding" when listening to the story of a woman abused at a church-run institution for native youth in North America.

Hickey noted the leader was "compassionate" about their personal experience and appeared "modest, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I felt like he was sincere, realistic, and receptive and keen to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The group is hoping that revisions to canon law will enable the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy globally.

They have consulted experts and compiled documents that they will submit to the pontiff.

"He appeared interested in reviewing it," they remarked.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recently released Vatican-commissioned document emphasized the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or removal of religious officials or staff in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The document also pointed out that victims consistently emphasized the "urgent need for bishops and major superiors to be held accountable for negligence and concealment."

Path Ahead

Hickey shared they told the Pope at the beginning of their discussion: "This represents as much a challenge for him to participate in a conversation as it was for us."

After the meeting, Hickey voiced optimism for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the end of the day, coming together and building a relationship and persisting to strengthen that relationship is a step in the correct path," they stated.

Hickey added that they shared with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can change how the story ends - he valued that."
