The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to St James' Park on late October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
