Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
